7 Warning Signs of Termite Damage in South Florida Homes

South Florida is one of the most termite-active regions in the United States. Because termites do their damage inside walls and structural wood, most homeowners don\'t realize they have a problem until it\'s significant. The good news: termites usually leave clues. Here are seven warning signs worth knowing.

1. Mud tubes on walls or foundation

Subterranean termites build pencil-width tunnels of mud and soil to travel from the ground into your home while staying protected. Look for them on foundation walls, piers, and in crawl spaces. Mud tubes are one of the clearest signs of an active subterranean colony.

2. Piles of tiny pellets (frass)

Drywood termites push their droppings out of the wood they\'re infesting, leaving small piles of pellet-like "frass" that look almost like coarse sawdust or coffee grounds. Finding these piles — often near baseboards, windowsills, or furniture — points to drywood termite activity.

3. Discarded wings

After termites swarm to start new colonies, they shed their wings. Finding small piles of identical wings on windowsills, near doors, or in spider webs is a strong indicator that a colony is nearby or established.

4. Swarmers indoors

Winged termites (swarmers) emerging inside your home — especially in spring and early summer — are a serious red flag. While a swarm outdoors is common, swarmers inside usually mean an active colony within the structure.

5. Hollow- or papery-sounding wood

Termites eat wood from the inside out, leaving a thin outer shell. Tap or press on trim, baseboards, or framing; if it sounds hollow or feels papery and gives way easily, termites may have been at work.

6. Bubbling or buckling paint and warped trim

As termites tunnel and introduce moisture, paint can blister or bubble and trim and woodwork can warp — sometimes mistaken for simple water damage. Either way, it\'s worth investigating.

7. Sticking doors and windows

The moisture and movement termites create can warp frames, causing doors and windows to stick or jam. On its own it\'s minor, but combined with other signs it can point to termite activity.

What to do if you spot the signs

Don\'t disturb the area or try to treat it yourself — that can scatter the colony and make professional treatment harder. The smartest move is a professional inspection to confirm the species (subterranean vs. drywood) and recommend the right solution, whether that\'s bait stations, localized no-tent treatment, or whole-structure fumigation. If you\'re buying or selling, you\'ll likely need a WDO inspection report anyway. Our termite inspections are free — and in a region like ours, an annual check is one of the best investments you can make in your home.
